How an Art Residency Helped me Process a Cancer Diagnosis

The Painted Way Presents

Where The Ink Ran Out

What started as a residency became a reclamation of purpose in the face of uncertainty.

Hello Reader,

I've been out on a healing project and I'll still be out for a few more days (I'm looking to return to some of my normal things next week). Thank you so much for those of you who have been here for years, I am so glad you a are a part of this community.

Welcome to the many many of you who have joined this community over the last month, I'm so glad that you're here and I can't wait to get to know you better.

I'll be back to regular emails next week but in the mean time I couldn't wait any longer to share all of the work I did while at my ArtQuest at GreenHill Residency at the beginning of May.

Together We Float!
-Alisha

Read about my "Where The Ink Ran Out" residency and these 12 unique pieces: Each piece is it's own expression of processing and healing.

Bruised Not Broken

Painted in deep purples and layered with soft silhouettes of faces, the piece speaks to the tender places we carry—where grief, fear, or physical pain show themselves not as signs of defeat, but as evidence of the body and spirit in the process of healing.

Fierce Audacity

This piece channels the power and movement of the chakra system—those unseen wheels of energy that govern everything from survival to expression to transcendence. As I painted, I meditated on those energetic centers, imagining them turning, aligning, opening. Each layer became an act of clearing, an invitation for healing to flow.

Radical Healing

The first piece in the series, Radical Healing was created at the threshold of a new chapter—a moment where personal transformation, creative inquiry, and a recent cancer diagnosis converged on canvas. With paint, ink, oil pastels, and torn journal pages, this piece holds both chaos and clarity.

Together We Float

Together We Float emerged from a moment of profound emotional clarity and surrender. Built on layers of old art journal pages and handwritten entries from 2018, this piece bridges past and present, stitching together the voice I once was with the woman I am now—standing on the edge of a healing journey, learning to float.

Reader Life has a way of throwing curveballs when we least expect it. And, right now, I'm in the midst of navigating one of those moments. I’ve recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. The good news is that it seems small and manageable. Still, the process is full of unknowns, and I want to be transparent with you as I move through this. What I want you to know is this: I’m fully committed to my work, my art, and my mission to serve you with everything I’ve got. This is another chapter,...

The Painted Way Presents Pre-Orders End March 27th Heirlooms In The Making Reader I recently watched Widow Clicquot, the story of Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin, born in 1777—the woman behind Veuve Clicquot champagne. After her husband, François Clicquot, passed away, she was left with debt, uncertainty, and a future that society told her was no longer hers to shape. In a time when women were not allowed to own businesses, she defied expectations, outmaneuvered men, transformed an unstable enterprise...
